Report: Trial production of recovered riverine litter

Trial production of PP from Aarhus River

This report takes the next step from testing to real-life demonstration. In a trial, polypropylene (PP) collected from Aarhus River was sorted, cleaned and processed into new material, which was then used to manufacture demonstration products including trophies and bookshelves.

The trial shows that properly processed river-collected plastic can be given a new life rather than simply being treated as waste. At the same time, it highlights some of the practical challenges that remain, including variations in colour, odour and material quality, and the need for further optimisation before moving towards larger-scale commercial production.

Together with COP’s mechanical and chemical recycling studies, the trial demonstrates that ocean-bound plastic can have several potential recovery routes depending on the type, cleanliness and quality of the material.
